How much anointing oil should I use?

The amount of anointing oil depends upon the purpose and form of the anointing. Scripture describes different methods, each carrying a distinct prophetic meaning. For ordinary personal anointing, the form known as mashah involves gently applying oil to the face, much like washing it. A small amount poured into the palm of the hand is sufficient for this purpose. The aim is to leave the face lightly anointed, reflecting the image of oil making the face shine (Psalm 104:15). This shining appearance points towards the glory of God and the light of the Holy Spirit becoming visible through His people. Scripture also describes anointing by sprinkling, associated with hallowing and consecrating people, garments, objects and places (Exodus 29:21). Pouring, by contrast, was used when individuals were appointed to particular positions of ministry or authority, as demonstrated in the anointing of Aaron and David (Exodus 29:7; 1 Samuel 16:13). These different forms should not be confused or applied indiscriminately.

For personal use, there is no need to pour large quantities of oil over yourself. The spiritual significance of anointing is not determined by the amount used, the strength of its fragrance or its commercial value. Anointing oil is a physical image of the empowerment of the Holy Spirit, and its value becomes meaningful when it is used in faith as a prophetic act. We do not accomplish more in the spiritual realm simply by applying more oil in the natural world. The purpose is to give visible expression to what we believe God has already established. A little oil is therefore entirely sufficient for ordinary personal anointing, while sprinkling requires only enough to perform the intended act of consecration. Use the oil responsibly, follow any product-specific skin-safety instructions and avoid sensitive areas such as the eyes. Above all, keep your attention directed towards the Lord. It is the presence and power of His Spirit, not the quantity of a physical substance, that gives anointing its deeper spiritual meaning.
