House of Anointing

Can anointing oil be used during worship or personal devotion?

Yes. Anointing oil can be used during personal devotion and worship as a prophetic expression of faith in the presence and empowerment of the Holy Spirit. Worship is much more than singing songs or participating in a church service. Jesus declares in John 4:23--24 that the Father seeks those who worship Him in spirit and truth. Genuine worship begins in the heart and is expressed through a life brought into agreement with God's Word. It involves surrender, obedience, repentance and an ongoing willingness to be led by His Spirit. Personal anointing can accompany this lifestyle by making our faith in the spiritual anointing visible in the natural world. Just as the golden lampstand required oil to keep burning, believers depend upon the Holy Spirit to shine with the light of Jesus Christ (Exodus 27:20--21). The physical act of anointing reminds us of this dependence. It is not performed to attract God's attention or to manufacture His presence, but to acknowledge the One who already dwells within those who belong to Christ.

Anointing also has a beautiful biblical connection with honour, devotion and wholehearted worship. In Luke 7:36--50, a woman anoints Jesus with fragrant oil, offering Him the honour and recognition that His host had failed to give Him. In John 12:1--8, Mary anoints Jesus' feet with costly spikenard, filling the house with its fragrance. These accounts reveal that anointing can express love, honour and recognition of Jesus Christ. During personal devotion, a believer may anoint themselves while praying, proclaiming God's Word or spending time in worship. Such an act should arise from sincere faith rather than becoming a ritual performed without understanding. The ultimate purpose of worship is not the physical action itself, but communion with the Father through Jesus Christ and the transforming work of the Holy Spirit. As we abide in His Word, surrender our lives to Him and allow His Spirit to lead us, worship becomes more than something we do at particular moments. It becomes the foundation of the Christian life, through which His holiness, glory and light are increasingly revealed in us.
