Does anointing with oil guarantee healing?

Anointing with oil is not a mechanical guarantee of healing, because the oil itself possesses no independent healing power. It is not a miracle drug or a magical substance that automatically produces a spiritual result when applied to the body. The biblical emphasis falls upon faith in Jesus Christ and the work He has already accomplished. James 5:14--15 does not attribute healing to the oil, but declares that the prayer of faith will save the sick and that the Lord will raise them up. This is an important distinction. Within the biblical understanding of prophetic action, anointing makes our faith in God's established promises visible. We do not perform the outward action to create healing in the spiritual realm. We act because we believe that Jesus has already provided it through His redemptive work. Isaiah 53:5 is particularly significant here, declaring that by His wounds we are healed. The confidence of the believer is therefore directed towards the finished work of Christ, not towards the act of applying oil.

This also raises an important question about responsibility when praying for someone who is sick. In James 5, the instruction is for the sick person to call upon the elders of the Church. These elders are expected to be mature in their faith and capable of ministering according to God's Word. The passage specifically identifies the prayer of faith, which places responsibility upon those who have undertaken to pray and anoint. A sick person should never be blamed for a lack of visible results, as though healing depended entirely upon their ability to believe strongly enough. Those ministering must continue growing in their understanding of God's Word, exercising their faith and learning to act in the authority entrusted to believers through Jesus Christ. If a result is not immediately visible, that does not change the finished work upon which faith rests. The appropriate response is to remain grounded in Scripture rather than attributing independent power to the oil or placing condemnation upon the person seeking healing.
