House of Anointing

Do I need to pray a specific prayer when anointing with oil?

There is no single prescribed prayer that must be recited every time you use anointing oil. The Bible gives us different examples of anointing, but it does not establish a universal formula of words that makes the practice effective. The spiritual value of anointing is not found in repeating a particular sentence, choosing impressive religious language or performing a ceremony perfectly. It lies in faith, obedience and dependence upon the Lord. A prophetic act of anointing gives visible expression to our confidence in what God has established in the spiritual realm. Consequently, our words should agree with His Word rather than merely express our personal wishes or assumptions. Romans 10:17 teaches that faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the Word of God. The more we become familiar with Scripture, the more confidently we can pray and act according to the promises and principles it reveals. Anointing should therefore arise from a heart that believes God's Word, rather than from an attempt to accomplish something through the repetition of religious phrases.

When anointing yourself, you may simply acknowledge Jesus Christ as your Lord, thank Him for the gift of the Holy Spirit and surrender yourself to His leading. You may proclaim the relevant promises of Scripture, allowing God's Word to establish faith within your heart. When anointing someone who is sick, James 5:14--15 instructs the elders to pray and anoint that person in the name of the Lord. Jesus also entrusted His followers with authority to act in His name, rather than merely waiting for Him to perform the responsibilities He had already given them (Mark 16:17--18). The purpose of prayer is therefore not to persuade God through elaborate wording, but to respond in faith to His Word and authority. Mark 11:23--24 places particular emphasis upon believing when we pray, even before the result becomes visible. This is the same principle expressed through anointing: faith in what God has established is made visible through our actions. A sincere prayer grounded in Scripture is of far greater value than a beautifully worded formula spoken without understanding or conviction.
