Anointing oil, an open Bible and olive branches on a stone terrace overlooking Jerusalem

House of Anointing

Can I anoint myself with oil, or is that only for pastors?

Yes, you can anoint yourself with oil. Personal anointing was a familiar practice throughout biblical times and was not exclusively reserved for priests, prophets or kings. Ruth was instructed to wash and anoint herself before approaching Boaz (Ruth 3:3), while Ecclesiastes 9:8 encourages us to let our heads lack no oil. Jesus Himself confirmed this familiar practice when teaching His disciples about fasting. In Matthew 6:17, He instructed them to anoint their heads and wash their faces, rather than deliberately appearing miserable to attract attention. His words demonstrate that personal anointing was an ordinary part of life. People did not require a priest to perform this action for them, nor was it considered something inappropriate for an ordinary believer to do.

Through Jesus Christ, every believer is also part of the royal priesthood described in 1 Peter 2:9. We have direct access to the Father through Him and are no longer dependent upon another human being to maintain our personal relationship with God. This does not mean that spiritual leadership has become unnecessary or that we should disregard legitimate authority within the Church. It means that leaders are called to help us grow in dependence upon Jesus, not to make us dependent upon themselves. Personal anointing belongs to your own relationship with the Lord. You are free to apply oil to yourself as a prophetic expression of faith in the presence and empowerment of the Holy Spirit.
