House of Anointing

Is it biblical to anoint myself with oil every day?

Yes. Personal anointing was a common part of everyday life among the people of Israel, and Jesus referred to it as a familiar practice. Psalm 104:15 speaks of oil making the face shine, while Ecclesiastes 9:8 encourages us not to let our heads lack oil. The significance of this custom becomes particularly clear when we examine what happened when people stopped anointing themselves. In 2 Samuel 14:2, a woman is instructed not to use oil so that she will appear to have been mourning for a long time. Daniel likewise refrained from anointing himself during a three-week period of mourning (Daniel 10:2--3). Jesus addressed a similar situation in Matthew 6:16--18. Some people deliberately neglected their normal appearance while fasting to make their religious devotion visible to others. Jesus instructed His followers to wash and anoint themselves as usual, keeping their fasting between themselves and their heavenly Father.

Daily anointing can also have a beautiful spiritual significance for Christians today. It is a prophetic expression of our dependence upon the Holy Spirit, who dwells within us and empowers us to live for Jesus Christ. Just as the lamps in the Tabernacle required a continual supply of oil to keep burning, we depend upon the continual presence and work of the Holy Spirit to shine with the light of Christ (Exodus 27:20--21). Personal anointing can become a simple daily moment of faith in which we acknowledge His presence, thank Him for His work within us and surrender ourselves afresh to God. It is not a religious obligation, a magical formula or a requirement for maintaining our salvation. The purpose is not to establish another rule, but to restore a meaningful biblical practice that directs our hearts towards Jesus and strengthens our conscious dependence upon His Spirit.
