What is the spiritual meaning of anointing?

The spiritual meaning of anointing begins with God, for all genuine anointing originates from His initiative, authority and presence. Throughout Scripture, anointing is associated with being chosen, appointed, consecrated and empowered for a particular purpose. It also carries a beautiful prophetic image of brightness, richness and shining. When Moses descended from Mount Sinai after spending time in the presence of the Lord, his face shone with such intensity that the Israelites were afraid to approach him (Exodus 34:29--30). When Samuel anointed David, the Spirit of the Lord came upon him from that day forward (1 Samuel 16:13). These accounts reveal the relationship between divine appointment, God's presence and the visible manifestation of His glory. Oil makes the natural face shine, providing an image of what the Holy Spirit accomplishes within a person. Anointing is therefore not merely an external declaration that someone has received a particular title or responsibility. Its deeper significance is the presence of God, who makes holy, empowers and enables His people to reflect His light.

Jesus Christ reveals the fullness and purpose of this anointing. His title, Messiah or Christ, means the Anointed One. In Luke 4:18--19, He declares that the Spirit of the Lord is upon Him and announces the purpose of His mission: to proclaim the Gospel to the poor, heal the brokenhearted, bring liberty to captives, restore sight to the blind and set the oppressed free. This reveals the heart of God's anointing: salvation, healing, deliverance and restoration. Through the New Covenant, believers are no longer merely invited to observe God's presence from a distance. They become His dwelling place through the Holy Spirit (Ephesians 2:19--22). The oil in the golden lampstand illustrates this spiritual reality. Although the oil itself was largely hidden within the lamps, its presence became visible when the flames began to burn. Likewise, the Holy Spirit dwells within believers so that the light of Jesus Christ may become visible through their lives. Spiritual anointing is therefore not about personal importance or religious appearance, but about God's presence transforming and empowering His people to fulfil His purposes.
