No. The Holy Spirit is not received through the physical application of anointing oil. Under the New Covenant, believers receive the Holy Spirit through their relationship with Jesus Christ. Ephesians 1:13--14 explains that those who hear the Gospel, believe in Christ and place their trust in Him are sealed with the promised Holy Spirit, who is the guarantee of their inheritance. Paul likewise declares that God establishes us in Christ, anoints us, seals us and gives us His Spirit (2 Corinthians 1:21--22). This is the spiritual anointing that belongs to those who have become followers of Jesus. It cannot be purchased, manufactured or produced by applying a particular substance to the body. Physical oil is the visible image of a spiritual reality whose source is God Himself. The distinction becomes especially important when we recognise that every genuine believer is now part of the royal priesthood described in 1 Peter 2:4--9. We do not become members of that priesthood because somebody has physically anointed us. We belong to it through Jesus Christ, our High Priest and King.
This does not make physical anointing meaningless. On the contrary, understanding the spiritual reality enables us to appreciate its prophetic significance more fully. The golden lampstand in the Tabernacle required oil to keep its lamps burning continually (Exodus 27:20--21). This provides an image of the believer's dependence upon the Holy Spirit. The oil itself was largely hidden within the lamps, but its presence became visible through the flames. Likewise, God's Spirit dwells within believers so that the light of Jesus Christ may become visible through their lives. Physical anointing expresses faith in that indwelling presence and the empowerment that comes from God. It is also important to distinguish receiving the Holy Spirit from being prepared and equipped for a particular ministry or responsibility. Spiritual growth, obedience, surrender and increasing maturity remain essential to walking effectively in God's calling. The oil does not replace that preparation or confer a ministry upon someone by itself. The Holy Spirit is the true Anointing, and physical oil is the prophetic image through which we may express our faith in His presence and work.
