Anointing with oil during prayer is a prophetic act of faith: a physical action through which we express our confidence in what God has established in the spiritual realm. Its significance does not lie in the oil itself, but in the spiritual reality it represents. Anointing oil is a visible image of the presence, holiness and empowerment of the Holy Spirit. Before using it, it is therefore important to understand what you are expressing through the act of anointing. Begin by directing your attention towards Jesus Christ, acknowledging His authority and allowing His Word to guide your prayer. For personal anointing, pour a little oil into your hand and gently apply it to your face, in the manner of washing your face. This corresponds to the form of anointing known as mashah, meaning to smear, stroke or draw the hand over. Psalm 104:15 describes oil making the face shine, while Jesus refers to personal anointing in Matthew 6:17. The shining face provides a prophetic image of God's glory and light becoming visible through someone who is filled with His Spirit.
Prayer and anointing should never become two disconnected religious activities. They belong together as expressions of faith in the living God. The physical act makes our inward conviction visible, while prayer and the proclaimed Word of God express our dependence upon His authority. It is important to understand the order: we do not anoint ourselves in an attempt to manufacture a spiritual reality. We anoint because we believe God's Word and give visible expression to that faith. The golden lampstand provides a beautiful illustration. Its lamps required a continual supply of oil to keep burning (Exodus 27:20--21). Likewise, we depend upon the Holy Spirit to shine with the light of Jesus Christ. During prayer, personal anointing can be a moment to acknowledge His presence, surrender ourselves to His leading and express our faith in His work within us. The purpose is not to develop another religious ritual, but to cultivate a living relationship with God in which His Word and Spirit remain central.
