Anointing oil is not a medical drug, a pharmaceutical preparation or a physical substitute for medical treatment. Its biblical significance belongs to the relationship between faith, prayer and the work of the Holy Spirit. The distinction is essential because the oil itself possesses no independent power to cure illness. In James 5:14--15, the elders are instructed to pray over the sick and anoint them in the name of the Lord. The passage directs attention towards the prayer of faith and the Lord who raises the sick person up. Likewise, Mark 6:12--13 describes the disciples anointing and healing the sick in the authority entrusted to them by Jesus Christ. These passages present anointing as a prophetic expression of faith in divine healing, rather than as a medicinal treatment that works through the natural properties of the oil. Anointing should therefore never be advertised, sold or understood as a medical remedy.
The biblical teaching that God heals through Jesus Christ does not, by itself, establish an instruction to abandon medical care. Scripture contains references to practical care alongside prayer and faith. Luke, for example, is identified as a physician (Colossians 4:14), while the Good Samaritan tends to the wounds of an injured man and arranges for his continued care (Luke 10:33--35). These passages do not provide a complete theology of modern medicine, but they demonstrate that practical care for the body should not simply be dismissed. A believer may seek prayer and anointing while also receiving appropriate medical attention. Neither prayer nor medical care should be used as a reason to condemn someone who is suffering. Anointing expresses faith in God's healing power; it is not a reason to discontinue prescribed medication, delay urgent treatment or disregard professional medical advice. The purpose of Christian ministry is to serve people with compassion and direct their confidence towards Jesus Christ, never to place their health at unnecessary risk through a misunderstanding of the physical oil.
